Time to Train!
Well, have had some glorious rides and runs over the past few months, June 2-4, also our 6th anniversary weekend, we hit the Blowing Rock area with friends, I managed to squeeze in a solo run at Moses Cone, running up and back to the fire tower that overlooks both Boone and Blowing Rock. Upon climbing the top of the tower, there stands Andrea Hykes, a grad school buddy and old tennis partner. Strangely, these types of things happen quite a bit for me, I run into people everywhere, this one was one of the more random ones however, as we both live off the mountain, very strange that we are both on top of the same tower in the blue ridge mountains at the exact sametime.
The next day my friend John and I did the same run but this time added in the run down and back to Trout Lake, a beautiful lake that Moses Cone built back in the late 1800s. Moses Cone offers over 25 miles of carriage trails and some of the best running along with views one can find. I really enjoyed being able to go there and also being able to take John for his first time.
The following week we hit Cape Cod for 10 days, my favorite beach type destination. I love it b/c you have the beach, great family, wonderful towns like Brewster, and more outdoor activities than you could imagine. Cape Cod has a wonderful rail trail running over 20 miles through the middle and out the cape, this is a short 5 minute run from Aunt Trudy's house, where we stayed. Off the rail trail is a wonderful park, with nice rolling paved routes and tons of singletrack. Nickerson State Park, a must see if you go to this area. I ran here almost daily and took Beth's brother Ben along for a couple of runs, it was really nice. Here is a map. One day Harrison, Don and I hit a great mountain bike area called the Trail of Tears, it was hilly as crap and kicked our butts, if you mountain bike, do not miss this place, it is incredible. All the bike info you need can be found here, including maps of all places I just mentioned.
Upon return, perhaps I was being punished for the good times, I took a bad spill on my mountain bike, basically flipped over the handlebars and my shoulder landed right on a rock, bruising my shoulder badly, gashing my right arm and legs. I'm better now but boy did that hurt.
Ok, now that we are caught up, it's time to Train, Marine Corp Marathon in October, I'm stoked!
